Staying on Course…

Perhaps more than at any time in recent memory there is such a confluence of events happening around the world that it is easy to lose our way and become confused about what we should or should not do.  With the swirl of economic collapse, unemployment, natural disasters and human suffering occurring on a world wide scope it is easy to feel fear trying to envelop you.

Many people are making their decisions based on the worldview of man rather than upon the timeless wisdom of God and while it may seem right at the time, time also has a way of revealing the wood, hay and stubble of our decisions.  I would like to propose to you three principles for making decisions that will always lead you into God’s will and purpose for your life and help insure that you stay on course.

First, when making your decision always weigh the eternal above the temporal.  Sometimes we feel pressed to make a decision that is expedient but will lead us away from God’s purpose for our life.  Expediency usually means the way of immediate gratification or alleviation of our present circumstances but can itself prove costly in the long term.  When we remember to esteem the eternal as more important than the temporary and make our decisions accordingly then God will lead us into a place of fulfillment of His purpose in our lives. All that is happening around us is in flux, but what is taking place in the Kingdom of God is unchanging.

Secondly, always weigh spiritual truths against the natural facts.  The facts of our circumstances always seem to scream at us the loudest, but that does not make them more significant.  The eternal truths of God will always triumph over the present facts of our lives.  God has said, “My word will not return to me without accomplishing its task.”  This takes an act of faith on our part; faith to believe the eternal truths of God more than the facts of our lives.  If we can learn to do this we will see God’s truth guiding our lives and decisions rather than our circumstances.

Thirdly when making decisions weigh God’s will as more important than the human will.  This perhaps is the hardest one to apply as we all tend to be self serving and act in a way that benefits us the most.  But when we seek first to know and do God’s will we can have confidence that our decision is made in God and not in ourselves and that the scope and results of our decision will be for the highest good and not merely self serving.

As followers of Jesus Christ we are living in the world but cautioned not to be fashioned by it.  If we will use these three principles as a part of our decision making process we will be far less likely to make decisions reflecting this present world’s standard and make decisions that honor Him and keep us on course.
